GM Recalls Nearly 700,000 Pickup Trucks

New York City motorists should be aware that General Motors is recalling nearly 700,000 vehicles over a power steering issue. The recall affects the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

According to a safety recall report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a software problem can cause pickup trucks to suddenly lose and regain electric power steering assistance while the vehicles are in motion. This could cause a driver to lose control of the vehicle and have an accident. The agency reports that the problem is most likely to occur when the vehicle is engaged in a low-speed turn.

Owners of the affected pickup trucks are instructed to take their vehicles to a GM dealership for a free software update, which should resolve the issue. Consumers can find out if their pickup is covered in the recall by visiting the NHTSA website or by calling the GM customer service line.

An auto defect, such as a software glitch, has the potential to cause a car accident, which could lead to serious injuries and fatalities. Individuals who have been harmed by auto defects may have grounds to file a product liability lawsuit against the automaker that manufactured the vehicle. If the claim is successful, a court may order the automaker to compensate the victim for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other related damages. If a victim is killed by an auto defect, their family could file a wrongful death lawsuit against the automaker to recover their losses
